Week one of the conference battles is in the books.  So what did we learn?  The big three are still the big three until someone knocks them off. Western was pushed to overtime, but found a way to win. Hamilton Heights puts 54 on the board and Lewis Cass slowly put another game in the win column.

Let’s take a look back at week number 3 of the season.

Western Escapes

The Western Panthers know one thing when it comes to week three.  They are going to get Taylor’s best.  And they got it! It took a late game comeback and overtime for the Panthers to win 27-21. The Titans put themselves up by 14 late in the ballgame.  Jake Leicht led his Taylor squad with 16 of 24 passing for 162 yards and a touchdown.  Leicht scored on the ground as well. But it was not enough.  Western scored with 47 seconds in the game to send the game to overtime.  Western blocked Taylor’s field goal attempt to set-up the winning drive.  Mike Jakubowicz capped off the comeback with a 5 yard touchdown scamper, his third of the night.  Jakubowicz finished the night with 107 yards rushing and 81 yards receiving.  Western moves to 3-0 (1-0) and Taylor falls to 2-1 (0-1).

Western hosts Northwestern and Taylor hosts Peru on Friday.

Hamilton Heights pours it on

The Huskies came into the game at 0-2.  Make that 1-2.  The Huskies have owned the series with the Braves and it continued as Heights wins 54-7. Hamilton Heights scores four touchdowns in the first quarter and it was lights out. Nathan Pickett finished the night with 69 yards and four touchdowns for Heights.  Maconaquah’s  Josh Morgan rushed for 51 yards on 11 carries.  Heights’ defense held the Braves to 145 yards of total offense on the night.  Hamilton Heights moves to 1-2 (1-0) and Maconaquah drops to 0-3 (0-1).

Peru Hangs On

The Peru Tigers led 26-0 at halftime, but squeak out a 32-27 victory.  Mason Zimmer was untouchable in the first half as he threw four touchdowns on 20-24 passing.  Three of those touchdowns went to Owen Jamison who finished with 9 catches for 130 yards.  Second half was all Joel Hoover as he caught two TD passes from Jonathan Keith and rushed for another.  Hoover ended up with 118 yards of rushing on the night.  Peru advances to 1-2 (1-0) and Eastern drops to 0-3 (0-1).

Kings Smother the Tigers

The Kings defense gave up some passing yards in their 24-6 win, but the Tigers rushing yards were negative twenty.  The Kings defense pressured Trevor Gibson most of the night sacking him several times.  The Kings offense was led by Damon Foreman who threw for 2 touchdowns and 159 yards.  Gibson countered with 202 yards of his own through the air. Lewis Cass improves to 2-1 (1-0) and Northwestern falls to 2-1 (0-1).

Week Four has some intriguing match-ups:

Lewis Cass (2-1) at Hamilton Heights (1-2)

The conference champion has been the winner of this game for the past five seasons.  Big game is an understatement. Kings defense has been outstanding.  The Husky offense hit on all cylinders last week.

Northwestern (2-1) at Western (3-0)

Rivalry!!  No love lost here.  This is what Friday nights are all about.  Western escapes last week and has a great chance at the conference crown.  Northwestern must rebound fast or it will be two straight losses.

Peru (1-2) at Taylor (2-1)

Taylor keeps pushing towards the upper tier in the MIC.  This is one that they have to get if they want to continue that journey.  In Peru’s case, new head coach Bill Skelton is looking to put his stamp on this program early. A 2-0 start in the MIC would go a long way in accomplishing that task.

Maconaquah (0-3) at Eastern (0-3)

Someone is going to get a much needed win in this one.  Eastern’s streak is at 24 in a row.  Watch for more big yards through the air for Jonathan Keith.  He is throwing it all over the yard this season.  Should be some points put on the board in this one.
