Peru uses a huge 3rd quarter to knock off Southwood in season opener

The first game went somewhat as expected, both teams had their jitters and it came down to who was going to shake it off first. Peru went into halftime with a 6 point lead, and that certainly was not to their satisfaction. The Tigers held Southwood to only 2 field goals in the 3rd quarter and opened up a 22 point lead going into the 4th. During the final period, Peru certainly didn’t let up. They closed out the game pushing their lead into the 30’s and finally winning 68-37. Wes Zimmerman led the Tiger attack with 19 points. Peru will be back in action Saturday 12-29 at Tig-arena when they host Logansport. Last year the Tigers edged out Logan by 5 at the Berry Bowl.

Tigers Poised to Defend Sectional title

The 2008-2009 Peru boy’s basketball team looks to build upon last season’s sectional championship.  With a strong nucleus of players returning, including 8 returning letter winners, the Tigers are looking to accomplish great things this season.  The returning players include seniors Mason Zimmer (6-5 forward) and Austin Shaw (6-2 forward).  Shaw did not play last season, but he returns this season after receiving a letter his sophomore year.  The Tigers also return a strong core of juniors that includes Terry Smith (6-1 guard), Justin Engel (6-1 guard/forward), Wes Zimmerman (6-3 guard/forward), Danny Comerford (6-0 guard), and Nathan Gillespie (5-9 guard).  The future also looks bright with a strong sophomore class led by Taylor Smith (6-2 forward) and Luke Primerano (6-4 guard/forward).  New to the Peru program are sophomores Robert German (6-8 forward) and Josh Hopson (6-5 forward).  Along with the sophomores, freshmen Travis Smith (5’9 guard) and Mike Grenier (6-0 forward) also join the Tigers.  The Tigers open their season at home against Southwood on Wednesday, November 26.  Their conference season opens up at Eastern (Greentown) on December 19.  The Tigers will rival last year’s MIC champ Northwestern and also Hamilton Heights for the conference crown.  Their sectional this year will be at Fort Wayne Wayne where they look to repeat as sectional champions.  Fort Wayne Wayne, Fort Wayne Elmhurst, Belmont, Norwell, and Maconaquah look to knock the Tigers off of their sectional throne.  Good luck Peru Tigers on the upcoming season!
