Round 1 is complete and four teams remain in the tournament.

Let’s take a look back at week 10 of the season.

Fore(man)nominal Performance

Lewis Cass battles back for a 29-27 victory over an impressive Bremen Lion team.  This was a night that not many Kings and Kings fan will forget.  A game that saw five fumbles from the Kings in which they lost three in the first half and trailed 21-10.  The Kings didn’t quit.  It was now Damon Foreman’s time to shine.  The first year junior quarterback put on a show.  Foreman ran for 131 yards and a touchdown while throwing for 87 yards and two touchdowns.  The passing touchdowns came as time expired in the first half and on fourth and goal to go from the 22 yard line.  An 85 yard touchdown run was sandwiched in between those touchdown passes for one of the best performances I have ever seen out of a quarterback.

Lewis Cass hosts Whitko on Friday.

Western Seconds That Victory

The defense was stifling and the offense turned it on in the second half as Western throttles Mississinewa 37-3.  The defense allows only 111 yards on the night while gaining 352 yards on offense.  Bart and Dean Shepard  account for three of the four touchdowns as Bart goes for 113 yards on the ground and 119 in the air. Dean picked up 64 yards receiving for an evening’s worth of work.

Western visits Yorktown

Sweet Revenge for Purple Tigers

Northwestern avenges an earlier 24-20 loss with a last minute 20-14 victory over Taylor.  Defense was the key the second half for the Tigers.  They gave up zero points and the offense mustered two scores to push Northwestern over the top for a huge sectional victory.  Derek Mumaw adds three more touchdowns on the season and another 108 yards of rushing. Mitch Daily caught four balls for 63 yards for the Tigers.

Taylor was led by Teddy Nolley.  Nolley rushed for 128 yards and two scores and had 60 yards receiving as the Titans end the season at 6-4.

Northwestern visits Tipton in round two.

Eastern Runs Out of Gas

Eastern puts 39 on the board in the first half but lay a goose egg in the second as the Comets season comes to an end in a 50-39 loss to Guerin Catholic.  Eastern amasses 481 yards of offense on the night.  Joel Hoover scores five touchdowns on 166 yards rushing and 153 yards receiving.  Jonathan Keith throws for 245 more yards on his spectacular season, but it wasn’t enough as the Comets end their season at 1-9.

Peru’s Offense Sputters in Loss

Northwood scores 13 quick points and the Peru Tigers never recovered as the Tigers go down 49-14.  Mason Zimmer passed for 170 yards and two touchdowns.  The ground game was non-existent for Peru as they can only muster 39 yards.  The Tigers finish at 3-7, but were much improved.  This could be a team to watch for in 2009.

Maconaquah’s Season Comes to a Close

Culver Academies ends a tough season for the Braves with a 24-8 final.  The Braves defense was excellent all night giving up only 194 yards on the night, but it was still not enough.  The Braves rushed for 208 yards on a balanced attack from Josh Morgan’s 85 yards and a touchdown, Jordan Calendine’s 65 yards and Phillip Newbill’s 58 yards. Maconaquah ends the season at 1-9.

Hamilton Heights Cruises Past Beech Grove

The Huskies run over Beech Grove for a 46-14 victory.  Brandon Bentley finds pay dirt three times for Hamilton Heights on his way to 146 yards rushing on the night.  Teammate Zach Copas wasn’t too far behind as he cashes in twice and rolls up 132 yards on the ground.

Hamilton Heights travels to Rushville on Friday

Round 2 Sectional Match-ups:

#3 2A Lewis Cass (9-1) hosts Whitko (7-3)

The Kings will try to avoid the letdown after an unbelievable comeback against Bremen.  Lewis Cass will continue to rely on the ground game to continue another sensational season.  The Kings are looking for their sixth straight 10 win season.

Lewis Cass and Whitko have never met.

I’m taking the Kings.

3A #7 Western (9-1) visits 3A #8 Yorktown (8-2)

Western has had a wonderful season.  This will be their toughest test to date.  The Panthers will look to continue their crushing ground attack.  Yorktown comes in averaging 29 points per game and giving up 13 ppg.  Yorktown is living the dream this season as this is Yorktown’s second winning season in the last eight.

These two teams have split two games in the last 15 seasons.

I will take the Panthers in this one by a Lazar field goal.

Northwestern (6-4) at 2A #18 Tipton (7-3)

Northwestern has found their running back of today and the future in Derek Mumaw.  Mumaw has rushed for eight touchdowns in the last two weeks.  Mumaw combined with Trevor Gibson’s arm and Brayden Merrell and Mitch Daily’s hands has the Northwestern team flying high.

Tipton hasn’t given up a point in two weeks and scored 95 points.  This is going to be a test for the Tigers.

Northwestern has won both meetings in the last 15 seasons with their last meeting being one year ago and it was a 17-0 for the purple Tigers.

I am staying on this train as Northwestern pulls off the upset.

Hamilton Heights (4-6) 5-5 w/o forfeit visits Rushville (6-4)

Brandon Bentley and Zach Copas had a huge game last week.  They will need solid performances again this Friday night.

Hamilton Heights is 2-0 in the last 15 seasons.  The last meeting was a 20-19 win for Heights last season in the sectional.

This matchup is too much for Heights.  I have to take Rushville and hope I am wrong.

The regular season has ended and the Lewis Cass Kings have been crowned MIC champs.

Standings           MIC           Overall

Lewis Cass          7-0            8-1

Western             6-1            8-1

Hamilton Heights 4-3            4-5

Taylor                4-3            6-3

Northwestern      3-4            5-4

Peru                  3-4            3-6

Eastern              1-6            1-8

Maconaquah       0-7            0-9

Let’s take a look back at week 9 of the season.

Tale of Two Halves

The Kings spoil Western’s perfect season and conference championship hopes with a 24-17 win.  The victory gives the Kings an unblemished 7-0 conference record.  The Kings dominated the first half by allowing only 7 yards of offense to the Kings 219 yards and 24-7 advantage on the scoreboard.  The Panthers adjusted on defense and turned a turnover into seven points to put themselves in the game at 24-14.  Jake Lazar added a field goal with 4:52 to play in the ball game to draw within seven at 24-17.  The Kings would take over and convert on third and long twice behind unbelievable effort plays by Kyle Moore and Keith Lee to run the clock out and celebrate their third MIC championship in four years.

The first half was all Cass as the Kings scored on two of their first three possessions and led 21-0 before Kyle Brown returned a kickoff 85 yards to draw to 21-7.  The Kings scores came on runs by Damon Foreman, Derrick Worden and Keith Lee.  Kyle Moore was the star of the night as he led the Kings with 69 yards on six carries and was everywhere on defense.

Lewis Cass visits Bremen and Western hosts Mississinewa

Northwestern Ends with a Bang

The Purple Tigers go out with a roar as they maul the Comets 48-7.  The Northwestern defense shutdown the high powered offense and Derek Mumaw rushed for 126 yards on 20 carries and five touchdowns.

Jonathan Keith completes the regular season with 127 yards passing which puts him over the 2000 yard mark for the season.

Northwestern host MIC rival Taylor and Eastern hosts Guerin Catholic

Taylor Pound the Braves

Taylor wraps up a tie for third place with a convincing 53-16 victory over Maconaquah.  Taylor puts up a grand total of 462 yards and finds the end zone eight times. Austen Conwell was the show on this Friday night as he accounted for three of the touchdowns.  He rushed for 67 yards and a score and added 120 yards receiving with two touchdowns.  Jake Leight passes for 247 yards on 12 of 15 passes.

Maconaquah was able to move the ball but once again fumbles cost the Braves numerous opportunities on the night.  Phillip Newbill rushed for 97 yards and two scores and Josh Morgan finished the night with 151 yards on 28 carries.

Taylor visits Northwestern and Maconaquah hosts Culver Academy

Hamilton Heights Slips Past Peru

The Huskies snap a two game losing streak with a 16-7 victory over the Peru Tigers.  The Peru Tigers led 7-6 but the Huskies added ten more points in the second half to tie for third place on the MIC.  Zach Copas scored two touchdowns and racked up 141 yards on the ground.  Teammate Brandon Bentley added 126 yards on 18 carries for the Huskies.

Peru was lead by Mason Zimmer’s 190 yards passing and a touchdown and Austin Shaw rushed for 61 yards.

Hamilton Heights hosts Beech Grove and Peru travels to Northwood.

Round 1 Sectional Match-ups:

#3 2A Lewis Cass visits #13 2A Bremen (4-5); 7-2 w/o forfeits

Bremen is thinking unfinished business while Lewis Cass is thinking business as usual.  The Kings look to keep their post season success rolling.  Cass has won regional titles 2 out of the last 3 seasons.  Bremen is a two time state champ, but has not won a sectional since 1997.  Lewis Cass defeated Bremen 27-13 last year in round 2 of the sectional.  Is revenge enough to get the Lions a victory or will another team fall victim to the huge front line of the Kings?  Lewis Cass had an excellent test against Western last week and passed it.

Cass and Bremen have split their two meetings.

I will take the Kings in this one.  (hey…I’m a Cass guy!)

Mississnewa (6-3) visits 3A #7 Western (8-1)

Western would love to have the first half back of last week’s game against Cass, but no time to dwell on the loss.  Western has a chance to make some noise this season in the tournament.  Offensively Western has many weapons, but the Panther defense is fierce.  The hard hitting linebackers and defensive backs could be the difference in this one.

These two teams have not met in the last 15 seasons.

I will take the Panthers in this one.

Taylor (6-3) visits Northwestern (5-4)

Wow!  What an opening match up for these two teams.  A 24-20 win for Taylor earlier in the year adds to the fuel in this battle. Teddy Nolley had a big night in first meeting rushing for 118 yards, but Shawn Fogleman had two interceptions and saved a couple of bad snaps in punting situations.  Trevor Gibson threw for 283 yards for the Tigers in the loss.

Northwestern has won 13 of the last 17 match-ups.

My gut says this game is in Northwestern’s favor.

Beech Grove (2-7) visits Hamilton Heights (3-6) 4-5 w/o forfeit

Hamilton Heights still has time to right the ship on this season.  Their first step is versus Beech Grove.  Zach Copas and Tyler Sherer have led the Huskies all year and this week will be no different.

These two teams have not met in the last 15 seasons.

I’m taking the Huskies to make it out of round number 1.

Peru (3-6) at 3A #9 Northwood (7-2)

The Peru Tigers have improved each week under first year coach Bill Skelton.  Mason Zimmer has matured as the year has gone along and Austin Shaw has explosive speed to compliment the pass game.  But this matchup is too much for the Tigers.  Good things coming for the Tigers.

These two teams have not met in the last 15 seasons.

I have to take Northwood in this one.

Guerin Catholic (4-5) visits Eastern (1-8)

Eastern’s offense has been incredible.  Jonathan Keith has put up huge numbers every week.  The defense on the other hand has had trouble all season.  Can Eastern score enough points?

These two teams have not met in the last 15 seasons.

I am taking Guerin Catholic in a shoot-out.

Culver Academy (4-5) visits Maconaquah (1-8) 0-9 w/o forfeit

Maconaquah has had a rough season.   A very young team that you hope sticks with it because the future is bright.  Josh Morganis just a sophomore and will keep getting better and a freshman quarterback saw time this season in Brian ****.  A good foundation for the future looms in Bunker Hill. This season needs to come to an end so they can start fresh.

Culver Military has won 7 of the last 12.

Culver Military wins this one.

FB – MIC Football Weekly – Week 8 Review

Written By:

Grant Davis

MIC Manager

Hoosier Authority.com

Week 8 of the regular season is over and then there were two.  Western and Lewis Cass have taken care of their own business for six weeks and now it is down to four quarters.

Let’s take a look back at week 8 of the season.

Western Remains Untouched

Western puts one on the Huskies as the Panthers cruise 38-13.  Bart Shepard was unstoppable as he racks up a career high 218 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.  Mike Jakubowicz added two touchdowns as well.  The Panthers totaled 375 yards rushing on the night in dominating the Huskies.

The Huskies could muster only 157 total yards.  Wyatt Toller rushed for 50 yards to lead Hamilton Heights on the ground.

Western is now 8-0 (6-0 MIC) and Hamilton Heights drops to 3-5 (3-3 MIC).

Western visits Lewis Cass and Hamilton Heights hosts Peru

Kings in a Blowout

This game wasn’t much of a game.  The Kings scored early and often in a 69-0 rout.  Lewis Cass scored 20 in the first quarter and 35 more before halftime.  Two straight weeks of running clocks in the second half for a dominating King team.  Cass rushed for 323 yards which included 15 different ball carriers.  Andrew Troutman led the way with 54 yards rushing.  Damon Foreman passes only twice but both of them go for touchdowns.  Nine different players score touchdowns on the night.

Maconaquah gained just four yards on only 26 offensive plays.

Lewis Cass improves to 7-1 (6-0 MIC) while Maconaquah falls to 0-8 (0-6 MIC)

Lewis Cass will host Western and Maconaquah visits Taylor

Taylor in a Wild One

The Titans hold on for a 40-35 victory.  Nearly 800 yards were totaled by the two squads on a night that saw Taylor never lose the lead but the game was always in limbo. Taylor led by six at half and traded scores the rest of the night.

Taylor’s Teddy Nolley rushed for 256 yards on 25 carries.  The scoring came from Shawn Fogleman as he has another unbelievable night scoring four touchdowns on five catches for 129 yards.

Taylor is now 5-3 (3-3 MIC) while Eastern falls to 1-7 (1-5 MIC)

Taylor hosts Maconaquah and Eastern hosts Northwestern

Black and Gold Tigers get the Best of Purple Tigers

Peru evens its conference record at 3-3 with a 24-21 victory over Northwestern.  It wasn’t without controversy as the Tigers appeared to have taken the lead late in the fourth quarter on a Trevor Gibson QB keep, but was marked short of the goal.

The difference turned out to be Chris Smith’s 24 yard field goal in the fourth quarter.  Peru was lead by Mason Zimmer’s 227 yards passing and one touchdown in the air and Austin Shaw’s 69 yards on the ground. Owen Jamison caught five passes for 90 yards and a touchdown while Zach Brunnemer caught eight passes for 95 yards and passed for a TD on the night.

For Northwestern, Erick Miller rushes 101 yards and a score.  Gibson throws for 170 yards 98 of those going to Brayden Merrell.

Peru advances to 3-5 (3-3 MIC) and Northwestern falls to 4-4 (3-3 MIC)

Northwestern visits Eastern and Peru travels to Hamilton Heights.

Week 9 Match-ups:

#3 3A Western (8-0) visits #5 2A Lewis Cass (7-1)

What more do we want?  For all the marbles…winner take all…any other saying you want to use.  This game has been talked about for weeks.  Both have incredible rushing attacks.  Both have stifling defenses.  Something has to give in this battle.  Western’s last win was 2002.  They are looking to turn the tables this year.  This game will be won in the trenches.  Tune in to WLHM 102.3 or a live web cast here on Hoosier Authority.  A must listen ballgame.

Cass has won 9 of the last 14 meetings.

Peru (3-5) visits Hamilton Heights (3-5)

Peru gets better every week.  This is a chance to cap off a solid season for the Tigers.  Hamilton Heights needs to regain their confidence.  The offense has sputtered against the good teams and rolled against weak opponents.  This game is a very interesting final contest of the regular season for both teams.

Hamilton Heights is 8-0 against the Tigers

Maconaquah (0-8) at Taylor (5-3)

After seeing Maconaquah first hand last week, the Braves has to have pride step up.  The offense mustered four yards last week.  Taylor’s defense will be licking their chops for this match-up if Maconaquah has the same effort as last Friday night.  Oh by the way, I predict Shawn Fogleman will have a big play in this game.

Maconaquah has won 9 of the last 14 games.

Northwestern (4-4) at Eastern (1-7)

I am still stunned that Eastern has only one win.  The offense has been great. Jonathan Keith is fifth in the state in passing yards with 1934. The defense has not and that has been the problem all year.  It doesn’t get any easier with Northwestern.  The Tigers have proven they can throw or run.

Northwestern and Eastern have split the last 14 meetings.
