Week 6 of the regular season is behind us.  The big three have come to the top once again.  Western remains undefeated.  Cass rolls on.  Hamilton Heights bounces back.

Let’s take a look back at week 6 of the season.

Western Rushes to Sixth Victory

Western puts up 311 yards on the ground as they beat the Peru Tigers 41-16 to remain undefeated on the season.  Mike Jakubowicz racks up some impressive numbers as he puts 171 yards and two touchdowns on the board.  Bart Shepard keeps running the Western offense like a well oiled machine as he completes three of four passes, rushes for 77 yards and scores three touchdowns.

Peru Tigers Mason Zimmer passed for 141 yards on 15-25 throwing but it did include two interceptions.  Nate Gillespie led the way on the ground with 55 yards and a touchdown.

Western is now 6-0 (4-0 MIC) and Peru drops to 1-5 (1-3 MIC).

Western hosts Eastern and Peru hosts Maconaquah

Kings Offense Unstoppable

Eastern hangs around but the Kings first team offense was never stopped as Lewis Cass wins 48-20.  Eastern and the Kings were tied at 14-14 early in the second quarter and then the Kings score 34 straight points to remain undefeated in MIC.  Colton Zeck rushes for 140 yards and two touchdowns while Kyle Moore adds 110 yards and 3 touchdowns.  The Kings tally 440 yards on the ground as they dominate on the offensive side of the ball.

Eastern continues to improve as Jonathan Keith connects on 19-36 for 267 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.  Freshman Joey Price catches four balls for 30 yards with two of those catches going for touchdowns.  Joel Hoover led the way in receiving with four receptions for 93 yards.

Lewis Cass improves to 5-1 (4-0 MIC) while Eastern falls to 1-5 (1-3 MIC)

Lewis Cass will host Taylor and Eastern visits Western

Hamilton Heights Returns to Winning Way

The Huskies return the opening kickoff of the second half to take a 22-19 lead and that is the way it would end.  Taylor has had a great season, but has been unable to get over the hump over two of the three giants off the MIC.  Hamilton Heights Zac Copas leads the way with 85 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns.  Zac Carlson’s 80 yard kickoff return for the Huskies proved to be the difference in the ballgame.

Taylor passed for 216 yards with 197 of those yards coming from the arm of Jake Leight. Leight hooked up with Shawn Fogleman for the first score of the night and then Shawn Fogleman would create his usual excitement with a 65 yard interception return for a TD to draw the Titans within three points.  Austin Conwell caught four balls for 112 yards. Jake Leight went down late in the ball game with an ankle injury and did not return.

Hamilton Heights is now 3-3 (3-1 MIC) while Taylor falls to 4-2 (2-2 MIC)

Heights will host Northwestern while Taylor will get their third straight test as they visit Lewis Cass.

Northwestern Captures First Conference Win

Northwestern puts up 27 points in the second quarter alone as the Tigers defeat Maconaquah 47-20.  The Tigers led 40-0 at one point in this game as the offense was able to total 427 yards.  Trevor Gibson passes for 185 yards on 10 completions.  His main man was Mitch Daily has he hauled in six passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Derek Mumaw rushed for 44 yards and two scores.  Northwestern’s scoring was rounded out by touchdowns from Brayden Merrell and Erick Miller.  Erick Miller finished the night with 117 yards rushing.

Maconaquah never quit as Jordan Calendine rushes for 108 yards and a touchdown while quarterback Phillip Newbill threw for 113 yards and ran for 85 and a score.  Devon Yoder rounded out the scoring with a three yard carry.

Northwestern improves to 3-3 (1-3) while the losing streak runs to 12 for the Braves (0-6, 0-4).

Northwestern visits Hamilton Heights and Maconaquah visits Peru.

Week 7 Match-ups:

Eastern (1-5) at 3A #3 Western (6-0)

Western’s offense is running wild.  They have put up big points the last two weeks and Eastern’s defense could not stop the Kings last week.  Eastern’s offense has been impressive as Jonathan Keith continues to wow fans with his athletic ability and arm.  Eastern must find some defense in this one or it could be a long night.  Live web cast will be on Hoosier Authority.com’s Indiana state page.

Western has won 12 of the last 14 match ups.

Taylor (4-2) at 2A #5 Cass (5-1)

Lewis Cass was relying on defense as the season started, but the offense has been good from the get-go as well.  The Kings will look to continue to pound it on the ground as they have racked nearly 800 yards the last two weeks.  Taylor has had a great season, but they continue to look to move into the upper tier of the MIC.  They have had heartbreaking losses to Heights and Western earlier in the year.  They have one more shot at one of the big three this week.  Shawn Fogleman has been everywhere this season for the Titans and Jake Leight has been very efficient all season long.  This should be the game of the week.

Cass has won 13 of the last 14 meetings.

Northwestern (3-3) at Hamilton Heights (3-3)

This should be a good game.  Northwestern has its confidence back and Hamilton Heights has played well the last couple of weeks.  Heights has been getting it down on the ground while sprinkling in the pass nicely.  Zac Copas has been able to chew up yards on the ground all season for the HUskies.  Northwestern on the other hand can get it done either in the air or on the ground.  Trevor Gibson has been solid throwing the ball all season and Erick Miller is coming off a 117 yard night.

Hamilton Heights has won 7 out of 8 games in this series.

Maconaquah (0-6) at Peru (1-5)

Peru has had two tough weeks against the league leaders.  Now they will see what they have learned as they take on county rival Maconaquah.  Peru has had trouble with turnovers, but Mason Zimmer and Austin Shaw will look to right the ship against the Braves.  For Maconaquah, they have been able to score points the last two weeks as Calendine and Newbill continue to play well.  The Braves will look to stop the losing streak against their cross county rival Tigers on Friday night.

Maconaquah has won 8 of the last 12 games.

I want to start off and thank all of the fine folk’s at all eight conference schools.  They have been an absolute delight to work with as we begin this new era of coverage for the Mid-Indiana Conference.  This includes the athletic directors, secretaries, coaches and the students.  Their support is a must for this site to work.

We are wrapping up our first full month of being a “live” conference on Hoosier Authority.com.  We have already topped 18,000 views for the month.  This is a great start!  We look to continue to rise with number of views for the site.

I would like everyone to know that the site has been undergoing some modifications the past several days plus my work schedule has limited the number of stories that have been posted.  I apologize for that and we will be back to full speed by this Wednesday.

The last reason I am sending this out is to ask for help in supplying short stories, pictures, and video clips of our local athletes.  If you have interest in contributing to our site, please email me at gdavis@digitalsports.com.

I also would like comments on our site and you can email me with your thoughts.

Week 5 of the regular season is over.  Everybody holds serve as Western moves on, Kings roll again, and Taylor is still a force to be reckoned with in the MIC.

Let’s take a look back at week 5 of the season.

Western Knocks Out Braves Early

Western raced to a 34-0 lead before winning 47-21.  21 points is the most the Braves have scored all year, but still not enough.

Bart Shepard took part in four of the touchdowns on the night.  Shepard ran for two as well as passed for two. Bart Shepard finishes the night with 77 yards on the ground and 67 in the air.  Jake Askren scored two rushing touchdowns and returned a punt 74 yards for his third score.  Maconaquah was able to score their most points of the season on a solid night by Josh Newbill as he rushes for 95 yards while passing for 47 yards.  Jordan Calendine scored two of the three touchdowns for the Braves on the night.  Western is now 5-0 (3-0 MIC) and Maconaquah drops to 0-5 (0-3 MIC).

Western hosts Peru and Maconaquah hosts Northwestern

Kings Defense Pitches a Shutout

The Kings shutout the Peru Tigers for a third straight year as the Kings win 48-0.  The defense for the Kings was bending by allowing 238 yards but none of those yards were into the end zone.  The Kings offense was incredible as well racking up 478 yards on the night. Foreman would finish the night 6-9 passing for 174 yards and a touchdown in the air and one on the ground. Keith Lee would lead the way on the ground with 5 carries for 65 yards as Cass would have 13 ball carriers rush for 300 yards.  Not one of those ball carriers would carry the ball more than five times. Mason Zimmer would complete 12 of 25 passes for 187 yards with four interceptions.  Tigers mustered just 51 rushing yards on the night.  Lewis Cass improves to 4-1 (3-0 MIC) while Peru falls to 1-4 (1-2 MIC)

Lewis Cass will host Eastern and Peru visits Western

Taylor Hangs on for Victory

It didn’t come easy as the Tigers made a furious comeback late to make a game of it, but come up short 24-20.  Northwestern remain winless in the MIC and Taylor avoids another late lost. Taylor’s Shawn Fogleman bails out a couple of bad snaps on punts, intercepts two passes and returned one of those picks for six points. Teddy Nolley would rush for 118 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown for the Titans.  On the Northwestern side of the ball, Gibson went 19 of 37 for 283 yards with two TD’s through the air and one on the ground.  Mitch Daily and Brayden Merrell each caught eight passes for 117 and 73 yards respectively. Taylor advances to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference while Northwestern falls 2-3 (0-3 MIC).

Taylor will host Hamilton Heights and Northwestern visits Maconaquah.

Heights Holds Off Comets

Big Plays was the common theme in a 35-26 win for the Huskies.

40 yard TD pass to Cale Roark from Jonathan Keith (Eastern)

75 yard TD pass to Beau Ely from Tyler Scherer (HH)

65 yard TD fumble return by Drew Smith (Eastern)

Brock Bolden blocked punt recovered by Bolden in the endzone (HH)

Two blocked extra points by Brock Bolden (HH)

On the night Tyler Scherer threw for 138 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.  Rushing leader for the Huskies was Wyatt Toller who goes for 95 yards on nine carries. Eastern’s Jonathan Keith continues his spectacular season with 260 yards on 22-31 passing with one TD through the air and on the ground.  Cale Roark and Joel Hoover each catch seven balls for 95 and 77 yards respectively.

Week 6 Match-ups:

Peru (1-4) at Western (5-0)

Peru’s defense was shaky at times against the Kings giving up ten plays of more than 20 yards.  Western will look for the same luck from their offensive juggernaut.  Peru can throw the ball and Austin Shaw can hurt you if you are not careful on the ground.  Peru has to keep their head up or this game gets ****.  By the way, Western has won 8 of the last 10 meetings.

Eastern (1-4) at Cass (4-1)

Lewis Cass’ front line has just been terrorizing teams.  Kitt O’Brien has taken his 300 lb frame to both sides of the ball and the scoreboard has shown the difference.  Jonathan Keith will throw it as many times as necessary or let the running game control and then strike from the air.  Eastern has competed in every game where that wasn’t the case the last several years. This could be an interesting game as many teams are trying to test the defensive backs of the Kings due to the massive line that the Kings bolster this year.  Gonna see some points in this one.  Kings have won 13 of the last 16 meetings.

Hamilton Heights (2-3) at Taylor (4-1)

I hear the sound of hands wringing together in Center.  Taylor comes into this game riding high and feeling good about themselves and they should.  Taylor has the best chance to beat the Huskies ever.  Hamilton Heights regain momentum offensively last week by scoring 35 points.  Tyler Scherer threw the football and good things happened.  This is going to be a good ballgame.

Northwestern (2-3) at Maconaquah (0-5)

Both clubs need a conference win.  Maconaquah needs a win period.  They are in the midst of an 11 game losing streak.  The Braves put up 21 points last week. The most they have scored all season.  Northwestern has had a brutal start to the conference season by taking on the top three teams in the league.  The Tigers were in the same boat last year and turned it around to go 8-5.  Friday night will give us a clue as to which direction both of these teams are headed.  Northwestern and Maconaquah have split the last 16 meetings.

FB – Kings Cruise…Again!!

Written By:
Grant Davis
MIC Manager
www.hoosierauthority.com

The Kings defense shines yet again as Lewis Cass rolls to 48-0 victory over Peru.  Cass (3-0 MIC) remains undefeated in the conference along with the Western Panthers.

The Kings defense was tested early as the Tigers took the opening drive of the game to a first and goal from the nine when Damon Foreman made the first of four interceptions of quarterback Mason Zimmer.  The defense would bend slightly the rest of the night but the goal line was never threatened again.

The second pick resulted in a 52 yard drive that was capped off by Derrick Worden’s eight yard touchdown run and a 7-0 lead.  Three of the four picks would lead to touchdowns and Kyle Moore took care of business himself as he returned Zimmer’s fourth interception for a 35 yard touchdown.

Big plays were the norm on Friday night as the Kings would have ten plays over 20 yards on the night. One of the scoring drives in the first half would include two of those big plays. A 61 yard pass to Evan DePew and a 35 yard run by Sean Ward with a QB sneak by Foreman from the one to cap off the drive.  Foreman would finish the night 6-9 passing for 174 yards and a touchdown in the air and one on the ground.

The Kings Keith Lee would lead the way on the ground with 5 carries for 65 yards as Cass would have 13 ball carriers rush for 300 yards.  Not one of those ball carriers would carry the ball more than five times.

The Peru Tigers posted 238 yards of offense but could not put enough plays together to break the goal line.  Zimmer would complete 12 of 25 passes for 187 yards with four interceptions.  Tigers mustered just 51 rushing yards on the night.

The Kings posted their eleventh straight win over Peru and their third straight shutout of the Tigers.

The 2A #8 Kings will host Eastern on homecoming next Friday night while Peru visits 3A #4 Western Panthers.

FB – MIC Football Weekly – Week 4 Review

Written By:

Week two is under our belts.  Two teams took another step forward and one shows that it can compete.  Western puts away Northwestern late and the Kings crush Hamilton Heights in a stunner.  Taylor shows that they are a contender in the conference chase.

Let’s take a look back at week number 4 of the season.

No. 5 Panthers March On

Northwestern hung around for three quarters, but the Western Panthers push two scores across in the fourth to win 35-21.  Kyle Brown made the play of the game when Northwestern was driving for a potential game tying score.  Brown forced a fumble on the Western 19 and picked it up and returned to the eight.  Western punched it in for a two score lead and Western never looked back. The Panthers were lead on the ground by Mike Jakubowicz with 154 yards and two touchdowns.  Western totaled 302 rushing yards on the night.  For Northwestern, Trevor Gibson passed for 186 yards and two touchdowns.  Mitch Daily caught four balls for 80 yards and a touchdown. Western is now 4-0 (2-0 MIC) while Northwestern drops to 2-2 (0-2 MIC).

Western visits Maconaquah and Northwestern hosts Taylor on Friday.

Lewis Cass Control Hamilton Heights In Win

Lewis Cass had something happen that has never happened before…they cruised in a game against the Huskies with a 34-6 win.  The Kings defense was in control from the opening bell.  The Kings allowed negative six yards in the first half on the ground.  Brady Tolle records 11.5 tackles and a sack while Kitt O’Brien and Cole Goodman manhandled the interior line to allow Tolle to run free.  Offensively the Kings rushed for 392 yards behind Colton Zeck’s 181 yards on the ground on 12 carries.  Zeck’s night was highlighted by a 96 yard scamper in the first half that left the home Heights fans in a tailspin.  Toller for Hamilton Heights was the leading rusher with 46 yards. Hamilton Heights will regroup and look to improve on their 1-3 (1-1 MIC) record while the Kings advance to 3-1 (2-0 MIC).

Lewis Cass will be on the road to Peru and Hamilton Heights will travel to Eastern.

It Is OVER!!

Eastern’s losing streak is over.  24 straight losses came to an end in impressive fashion as the Comets mow down Maconaquah 33-7. Jonathan Keith continues to impress as he connects on 14-21 for 259 yards and four touchdowns.  Joey Price caught a touchdown and returned a fumble for 99 yards in Eastern’s winning effort. Tyler Harnish received two touchdown passes to keep the high scoring offense rolling for the Comets.  Maconaquah will find some positives in this game.  They drove the ball all game long but fumbled on three occasions to stop drives in Eastern territory.  Maconaquah rushed for 143 yards as a team with Josh Morgan accounting for 109 of those yards and Jordan Calendine with 71 yards.  The loss puts Maconaquah streak at 11 games and an overall record at 0-4 (0-2 MIC) and Eastern improves to 1-3 (1-1 MIC).

Eastern hosts Hamilton Heights and Maconaquah gets Western at home this Friday night.

All Taylor

A lot was learned about the Taylor Titans on Friday night during the 40-0 victory over the Peru Tigers.  Heart…After a miserable loss last Friday night to Western, the Titans came out and dominated on both sides of the ball.  Shawn Fogleman was all-world on the night racking up two touchdown, two interceptions, and 83 yards receiving.  Jake Leight was 15-19 for 226 yards and four touchdowns while his running back freshman Gordon Jenkins rushed for 86 yards on six carries and two scores.  For the Tigers, they will go back to the drawing board. Austin Shaw was the highlight rushing for 53 yards and caught two balls for 40 yards.  Peru drops to 1-3 (1-1 MIC) and Taylor moves to 3-1 (1-1 MIC).

Taylor visits Northwestern and Peru hosts Lewis Cass.

Week 5 Match-ups:

Western (4-0) at Maconaquah (0-4)

Oh Boy!!  Maconaquah has to find some defense and fast.  Western has scored points in bunches all season.  The four headed monster of Bart Shepard, Dean Shepard, Mike Jakubowicz, and Jake Askren has been lethal.  Western folks are seeing something special in Russiaville this year.  The Panther swagger is back.  Maconaquah must finish off drives with points instead of turnovers in this one.  Check out all the live action of Western Panther football on Hoosier Authority.com.

Lewis Cass (3-1) at Peru (1-3)

Cass coming off a highlight Friday night in soundly beating a Hamilton Heights team and Peru got popped in the mouth by Taylor.  Mismatch…wait a minute…Cass is on the backside of a meat grinder schedule.  Could they overlook the Tigers?  Time will tell but Peru has to handle the massive front line of the Kings which has dominated the first four weeks.  Kings have won all ten meetings since Peru re-joined the conference.  Peru must re-group for this Friday night’s match-up.

Taylor (3-1) at Northwestern (2-2)

This is the marquee match-up of the week.   Northwestern has won 13 of the last 16 meetings in this series.  Taylor has a much improved team and looks to keep the momentum rolling.  Taylor lost a heartbreaker in conference game number 1 of the season and hammered Peru in week 2.  Northwestern is ready to come up for air after playing the league leaders Cass and Western in the first two weeks.  Taylor must win if they want to keep their conference hopes alive.  Northwestern looks break through on the conference side of things.  This will be a dandy come Friday night.

Hamilton Heights (1-3) at Eastern (1-3)

This is the opposite ends of the spectrum game.  Eastern can’t be any higher after snapping their 24 game losing streak and Hamilton Heights can’t be a whole lot lower after losing to Cass.  Jonathan Keith has been excellent in the quarterback spot and has received great support on the ground.  Heights’ running game was stymied last week but Tyler Scherer can throw it if they give it chance.  This game is huge for coach Edwards and the Comets.  This game is a true measuring stick for the Eastern program in Edward’s second year.

VB – Eastern Clears Another MIC Hurdle

Eastern took a huge step in the conference race last night as the Lady Comets defeated Peru in a five game thriller.  Eastern improves to 3-0 in the conference with the 15-25, 25-13, 23-25, 25-16, 15-8 win.  Peru drops to 2-1 and will have to play catch-up with Hamilton Heights and Eastern.

The win ties Eastern with Hamilton Heights at 3-0.  These two team will meet next Tuesday at Eastern.

Peru took an early two game lead and looked destine to put themselves in the conference race, but Eastern refused to go away by dominating games four and five.

Chelsea Wilson continues to dominate the MIC with 19 kills, 13 blocks and 11 service points. Haley Maverick and Kayleigh Lindsay had 11 kills apiece and numerous digs.

Eastern (9-5, 3-0) will host Cass on Thursday while Peru (5-7, 1-2) will host Wabash on Thursday as well.
